TikTok Exec doesn’t believe in offering maternity leave

Joshua Ma, Head of Ecommerce, has reportedly told employees at TikTok’s London offices that as a ‘capitalist’ he doesn’t believe in offering paid leave to new parents.
TikTok says it is investigating the alleged comments, amid reports that Ma will ‘take some time off’ whilst the investigation into the alleged comments is completed.
Since the London offices were opened less than a year ago, half of the 40 member ecommerce team have left, with one ex employee describing the culture as ‘toxic’.
Current staff have reportedly told The Financial Times that work days regularly exceed 12 hours per day, and many are considering quitting. There have been reports of UK job applicants turning down job offers and rejecting interviews with TikTok.
This clearly illustrates the importance of workplace culture in attracting, motivating and retaining employees. For a great culture to develop, employees need to be treated with respect, feel valued, and for their expectations to be met.
Family friendly policies have become increasingly popular, with many employees prioritising work life balance.
